What you see as "being a jerk" is another person's means of protecting their own interests in the area. Because we have the means, someone will eventually deface any "public property," so that makes public property impossible to share.

Also, funny how some people made the same arguments about fencing in 19th century cattle country. Yet we still have laws protecting landowners and their right to erect fences on their property because it is saner and more easily regulated than the alternative.

the whole fucking reason for people claiming quest trees is to protect them from literally 1 day old alts from chopping the trees.
we wont stop claiming them until some good measures has bin taken to protect trees in a better way.
see homo sexuality trending,. do not do that.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but palisading, placing a visitor gate and leaving trespassing (or even theft) permissions to white (strangers) still prevents others from destroying the NPC, doesn't it?

If that's the case, then yes, you're being a jerk if you prevent others from accessing it.

The whole point of the game is that there are only so many resources and resource spots, if you don't claim it someone else will, etc.
The whole reason seige, theft, pvp exist (well at least in theory) are to challenge people's claim to things. So go bash the claim, rob some of the clay/sand, talk to the owner and see if you can enter their claim/trade for some of the shit they claimed, or do nothing and miss out on good resources.
Either way stop whining on the forums about it lmao. There's an argument to be made some of the game's systems (ie seige) are still imperfect but that doesn't mean you get to whine about people exerting their will upon the persistent landscape because that's literally the whole point of the game.

Well I'd say 'being a jerk' is pretty relative in any case. There is obviously some advantage to claiming a questgiver, namely that the wilderness is a dangerous place and so visiting a questgiver outside your walls has some chance of killing you (wild animal, hostile player, etc) and it's just more convenient. It is obviously to the detriment of other players who want to visit said questgiver, but claiming a cave is a detriment to potential miners, and claiming a natural wonder is a detriment to players who want resources from it, and claiming literally any tile in on the map is a detriment to passing foragers. Claims stop people from entering an area that might contain things useful to them, and if you define being a jerk as "preventing people from accessing things they might like to" then literally everyone who owns a claim (or walls, or a leanto even) is "being a jerk".
If you want to claim something because you want exclusive/safe access to it that's fine, if you don't like it when someone else does that, talk to them or destroy the offending claim. If you think someone claiming something is them "being a jerk" because it acts against your self interest then you better remove your claim and let all the sprucecaps have all your shit, which I'm sure they'd like to have and which your safe base is preventing them from having.

The need to tresspass when boating is one of the worst "newer" ideas (plain forcing a playstyle) ... claiming sand isn't (as long as i play i've seen claims for sand ... but i always could boat over without needing to leave scents ...) - If there's no way to build claimpoles on sand anymore the claims just get larger ... and block more ...

Because its too cheap to secure resources.

No, it doesn't, but it at least raises the stakes. however, bugs exist, and that's why this is still an "alpha" level project.

you make a valid point here, but "naked" claims like this should be very vulnerable to destruction, and they aren't.
