bots?
Midges do not affect bots. Even if the bot were very badly written and it lets midges take 90% of its HHP, it's still no problem for a bot. You can just let the bot rest for a bit, or spawn a new alt for botting, and the problem is solved again.
It's people who use their main for everything that are most fucked by midges. Allergic Reaction gives -10 STR and -10 AGI and heals slowly. IIRC it even stacks as multiple wounds to make absolutely sure your character gets crippled. It can also KO people low on HP to net you an additional concussion to cripple your main. From the 'Bitching about adders' thread:

Evidence that the developers actually hate us. I once got KO'd by one after hearthing home from another KO. I was on my way to my bed from my fire. Moved my HF indoors after that. How do you get a concussion from a goddamn midge bite.
Midges do nothing except fuck over legit players. The more you do on a single character, the harder you get fucked. Even without the Allergic Reaction and possibility of Concussions, getting your HHP reduced
for the sin of merely being outside is bullshit that only really affects mains.

And they fuck you over whenever you want to do something that requires you to stand still or move slowly - building, crafting, farming, chopping trees. You know,
playing the game.

Midges are not 'hazards'. There is zero tactical choice involved in their presence. If there are midges in your base, you can only log off until they're gone. You cannot avoid midges in places you want to do anything that involves standing still. You cannot do anything to chase midges away. Midges are not hazards that can be avoided or mitigated through skillful gameplay; getting fucked by them (outside of swamps where you'd be dumb to get hit) is never the fault of the player, unless you consider their choice to
play the game instead of logging off to be a mistake deserving punishment. Midges are more like disasters, they just overcome you and you just have to deal with getting fucked over for no reason.

Generally speaking, due to how items reload in the world, swamp villages should be actively discouraged. They ruin the swamp for everyone.

This. Burn them to the ground.
I'd be fine with midges if they were restricted to swamps and their direct environment. But they aren't. They're fucking everywhere and will fuck you over regardless of where you build your base, even at a massive distance from swamps.
Midges are a completely uninteractive element of the game that punishes the player for simply playing the game. There is no way to mitigate their impact other than logging off and waiting for them to despawn, or to use characters with such low involvement that you do not care about them (alts and bots). They discourage normal gameplay and encourage low-involvement gameplay (e.g. botting - something the devs say they want to discourage). Moreover, they are considered unfun by basically the entire playerbase (save for a few trolls who enjoy the suffering of others more than they mind their own suffering). It completely baffles me that midges are still in the game as-is - they serve no beneficial purpose whatsoever, and have plenty of negative effects. They really need a serious rework or complete removal as they make the game clearly worse.
