A peaceful mode...

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

I wonder if they intend to actually do something different with the new server though. Like Path of Exile leagues usually have new and varied mechanics surrounding the core gameplay. Haven & Hearth doesn't really have anything like that change before a new world is launched. Or such changes tend to get removed/reversed not long after they have been implemented.

I bet that one of the reasons this world will last probably longer than 6 months, wich will apparently be the recycle date for any of the new steam servers, is to see if an old server will retain players after the factions game is gone because they move to the new server.
This way will create a semi-permanent server wich will stay up until some changes would need a wipe (or the databases are too big to keep going on), and another server wich will have 6 month in 6 month wipes.

Bit sad for me that steam did not took the change in playerbase i hoped for, while i write players are down to 1/4 of the start, that in 1 and half a month...hope it's because of christmas and stuff like that.

In my limited play time, this game mostly reminds me of another MMO called Boundless which has no PvP mechanics. The aesthetic/setting of that game is completely different, but the gameplay loop is very similar. The core differences that allow them to have a similar game with no PvP mechanics and minimal griefing: Player models don't clip with each other, everything regenerates and does so much faster, the game world is significantly larger, claims decay substantially faster if you become inactive, quality nodes aren't a thing, and there is active in-game moderation by the developers. I'd argue that making all of the changes required to make a pure PvE version workable would make the game lose some of its charm, even among someone like me who has no interest in engaging in PvP. Quality grinding and scarcity of resources both have gameplay appeal to me, but those things also necessitate PvP mechanics to be present.

I know that's part of the game but I would be more likely to invest real world money if I didn't dread my character being slaughtered and robbed. I'm more of a peaceful player. Even a second server to allow for non PVP would be an option. :?:

Most of the playerbase feels the same way but the devs probably aren't gonna risk alienating the loud minority of pvp'ers since they contribute the most money and most of the game's """prestige""" via faction drama etc.

Personally I'm not against pvp as such, it's just the turn-based/card-based/stat-based combat system bores me to tears. I'd be all for open pvp if combat was more "real-time" and based on skill instead of stats/equipment. Until then, yeah, give us the option to opt out of pvp.

"most of the playerbase" aka "me and the voices in my head when i cherrypick for every other sprucecap thats ever been incapable of playing an open pvp sandbox game"
also the fact that you think combat in hafen is "turn based" means you know literally nothing about it

Original legacy combat was inspired by Magic The Gathering and turn-based/action-based RPG battle systems. The card stuff is based on the MTG style. Seems like you know nothing.

Dick response, but I did chuckle at the statement :)

relevant post i made in another thread:

Kaios wrote:I don't think the card system that combat uses is at all fitting for real-time combat. Putting points in to attack/defense cards, the restorations, and maneuvers are all reminiscent of old turn-based RPG or card game combat/duelling mechanics.

Here's an example from a game I tried out awhile ago, Broken Ranks:
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IusYRXeGPTE

Limited number of action points that go into the various attacks and defenses which can be modified on your turn throughout battle, and how you use them depends on what you're fighting. Sounds a lot like the card system in Haven & Hearth, right? Except that it's turn-based combat. So why are they trying to infuse turn-based mechanics in to a real-time combat system? It doesn't make any sense.

Considering the Holmgang idea as another reference, though it may not have been their idea originally, it really seems like their vision for combat revolves around games that utilize turn-based strategies and tactics.

I love the card based combat system, it's like street fighter except that you can swap all ur dang moves out for other ones. Collecting and sharing them with friends with combat instructions is fun and a cool feature. Way better than all the other MMO combat systems, where you just right click, wait, and occasionally press a hotkey to use an ability or w/e tf. Personally can't think of a better system that fits this game as well, except if maybe controller support was added.
