99% of PVP/permadeath woes are an onboarding issue

The first thing they need to fix is expectations.

The Steam page makes it look like a chill mmo game.
The video and screenshot show collaboration, a cute village without even a palisade, a smithing are where the palisade is only half built (as if unimportant), co-op hunting...
No PvP whatsoever. Even the game tags don't have PvP in it.

How do you expect people to react once they join and realise the game is nothing like it seems in the trailer?

The trailer needs to show a scroll through a forum argument full of slurs and people saying "delete x feature" that cuts to the rankest image-you-can-smell neckbeard nest to reflect the full Hafen experience

I remember back when my good friend, Bob Dole, could be assed to play Haven and made this:

Wouldn't it be more fun if players could actually steal from each other? I'm not talking about griefing players to the point where they can't play anymore, like the current crime system allows.
I mean sneaking into someone's base to steal a few items, mess with their stuff and maybe getting punished for it or not.

This is a good point I didn't think of! Would probably be good. I'm going to guess they didn't feel like going out of their way to stage more lol
Also the current trailer's audio is gained way down for some reason??

That's surprisingly not terrible.
A couple of those segments -cave in, dungeon, and bear- are pretty accurate for newbie experience.
Still doesn't shine a light on pvp (had to look twice to notice the archer in the beginning, and that scenario is not what usually happens), but at least it does show that you can both get hurt and actually die from other stuff.

... Or just remove PvP. Make one continent free of pvp with an option to spawn there, just an ordinary continent, with no penalties or benefit, randomly generated as it is, but without PvP in it, all down to the lowest mine level. And check out where people will play and for how long.
Even if something will not be generated in it, even if some content like whaling will be outside safezone - it's all good.
Every problem that is currently "solved via pvp by design", like bot griefing, contesting something and ect. is much more easily solved then trying to make PvP ballanced and enjoyable.
