Is gain per unit of food that much more important than gain per unit of time?

The problem is that 300% vs 50% means that a single food eaten at 300 = 6x the FEPs of eating at max hunger. If it was 120% vs 100%, people wouldn't be complaining nearly as much. There are competing time sinks in the game, balancing food vs questing vs hunting vs trading, etc means that spending 6x as long getting food for the same stat gain just isn't viable.

The main issue though is that hunger filler foods are often undesirable FEPs. Hard work characters are forced to eat junk just to survive, miners being a prime example. Strength foods are not amazing sources of energy for the effort spent to create them. This goes doubly so early world where currently the best hunger filler food gives will which miners can't afford to pump when STR food is quite limited in early days.

I've proposed a hunger/fep less energy food in the past to address this issue. If it's cheap to make people would use it, and it would certainly reduce the need for alt spam at least. But in general I agree that we should just unify hunger into the satiations system for simplicity.

This. There is a huge difference between 300% and 100%. I'd much rather eat 1 meatpie than 3 meatpies. Inflate that to a bigger value, let's say 1000 meatpies versus 3000 meatpies. Now imagine all of the time you saved by baking 2000 less pies and eating at 300% hunger?

And when you go past the 300% level you simply stop eating and wait for it to recede again? Or you quest and use salt as per what Coles said?

Yeah, you just log out and play on your "alt". Alt in quotes because early on that character is actually what you use majority of the time, the main mostly just logs in to eat and maybe do a foraging run or some combat card grinding. It takes a lot of energy to recover from card grinding too, so spending energy on other things is wasteful.

tbh im just embracing the suck and accepting 90% fep because im a miner and it means im constantly fucking my character's efficacy 24/7 to restore my energy and fep str.

I don't quite understand. I mean, the 300% bar takes 9 RL days to empty out on its own, longer than has even passed since the reset. Are you saying that you have all eaten less food on your mains to even fill up that one bar? it is difficult for me to imagine that you it would even be possible to gain enough FEPs just from that one hunger bar to do any meaningful leveling at all.

It used to be that hunger drain was constant, only starving region was wider than full region. Basically the break even pace where you ate in balance with hunger restoration was the same on all hunger levels. Has this changed?

...? That has never been the case. The higher levels have always drained faster.

...no? Not quite sure what you're talking about, but 1% hunger from a food item has always filled the same 1% on the hunger bars, regardless of which bar you were on.
