There is obviously some advantage to claiming a questgiver, namely that the wilderness is a dangerous place and so visiting a questgiver outside your walls has some chance of killing you (wild animal, hostile player, etc) and it's just more convenient. It is obviously to the detriment of other players who want to visit said questgiver, but claiming a cave is a detriment to potential miners, and claiming a natural wonder is a detriment to players who want resources from it, and claiming literally any tile in on the map is a detriment to passing foragers. Claims stop people from entering an area that might contain things useful to them, and if you define being a jerk as "preventing people from accessing things they might like to" then literally everyone who owns a claim (or walls, or a leanto even) is "being a jerk".
If you want to claim something because you want exclusive/safe access to it that's fine, if you don't like it when someone else does that, talk to them or destroy the offending claim. If you think someone claiming something is them "being a jerk" because it acts against your self interest then you better remove your claim and let all the sprucecaps have all your shit, which I'm sure they'd like to have and which your safe base is preventing them from having.
If you really believe that claiming your village or a limited resource, and preventing access to an NPC is the same thing, then it's pointless to keep this discussion going.
