There is obviously some advantage to claiming a questgiver, namely that the wilderness is a dangerous place and so visiting a questgiver outside your walls has some chance of killing you (wild animal, hostile player, etc) and it's just more convenient. It is obviously to the detriment of other players who want to visit said questgiver, but claiming a cave is a detriment to potential miners, and claiming a natural wonder is a detriment to players who want resources from it, and claiming literally any tile in on the map is a detriment to passing foragers. Claims stop people from entering an area that might contain things useful to them, and if you define being a jerk as "preventing people from accessing things they might like to" then literally everyone who owns a claim (or walls, or a leanto even) is "being a jerk".
If you want to claim something because you want exclusive/safe access to it that's fine, if you don't like it when someone else does that, talk to them or destroy the offending claim. If you think someone claiming something is them "being a jerk" because it acts against your self interest then you better remove your claim and let all the sprucecaps have all your shit, which I'm sure they'd like to have and which your safe base is preventing them from having.

If you really believe that claiming your village or a limited resource, and preventing access to an NPC is the same thing, then it's pointless to keep this discussion going.

He explicitly says they aren't the same thing, but both fall in line with your definition of "being a jerk" that you provided.

Please don't argue in bad faith

They're both acts of making your gameplay easier at the expense of others. There are people near me with quest givers claimed and it's annoying but so is having to walk a mile to the nearest cave because they're all claimed, and you don't see me bitching that people are playing the game as it intended. If there's some big difference between the two I'm not seeing please let me know, otherwise it really is pointless to call people jerks because they inconvenience you when the developer's stated opinions on this sort of thing are "if you don't like what others are doing, do something about it", see http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=44710.

In other words if you think people acting in a way that has the unintended/secondary consequence of inconveniencing you is "jerky" it's about time to find a different game to play. I'd recommend Candy Crush.

It is pretty funny to see the forum shift from "OMG claims too easy to destroy", to "OMG claims too hard to destroy" in a matter of weeks, without any changes at all being made to claims. It also highlights some pretty strong issues with claims in general.
  • Naked claims should be vulnerable to 10 str + sledge hammer
  • The destruction of a claim should leave a special scent that only appears, and starts decaying, after the claim owner logs in. No nidbanes
  • Claims still drying should still protect themselves

Actually, they aren't even destructible right now if I understood jorb correctly during the stream. Thus the point?

Perhaps the opinion of the person who created this game will be of more interest to you. Read this: http://www.havenandhearth.com/forum/viewtopic.php?f=40&t=44710, read it again, read it several more times, and then try and claim that you are 'peaceful'.

Unfortunately, by logging into the game, you consent to a set or fules. Whether you choose to adhere strictly or loosely to the rules is your own choosing. You choose to adhere to the game rules loosely and create your own circumstances. Don't expect anyone to have sympathy for you if you choose not to do what is required.

This is stupid, this is unwise, this is some sort of wildness! I'd appeal to your mind but it looks like you've lost it.

It is clear that no one will do anything with these "people". The only question is why do they do it? You tell me what it is to stop the development of other players. BUT what kind of players? peaceful and harmless, for which the sand of 30 qualities is manna from heaven. Are you a prowler? Are you afraid of such unfortunate and harmless? or are you so entertaining your ego by mocking such players, why good people pay for your loser’s life, you need to fight in the real world and not at W12. Everyone knows that big villages will just come and take everything and they will be tracked back to them or not. So this is only aimed at weak and new players for which everything is new. In short, because of such greedy "people" and part of the potential audience, a good audience with whom you can communicate and coexist, goes away. As a result, the world is slowly turning into a trash.
