One other thing that would perhaps increase player retention would be a functioning trade system. If you could construct a machine or device that would let you trade on the world market, it would make it easier for casuals to buy more advanced items and maybe even out the playing field a bit. Also it would give us traders an incentive to keep playing.

I do not think ship size and player experience correlate very well for this. I am also not sure if big bad player killing nab is really as big deal as you seem to make it, either.

In EVE ship size (and power) and player (character) experience is directly correlated since the character needs to have learned stuff to be able to fly them.

Sure, you can gank smaller ships. But you have to use something in or near their class instead of just building the biggest one and with it kill everything that you meet - because that isn't how it works there (which is a good thing).

And yes, I think sprucecaps meeting a sudden demises delivered by 'higher' characters (who handle them like a kind of mob) have a good chance to quit.

Lower (equipment wise, so they run faster) characters being brought to a fight to follow (and being able to cartch up) with fleeing characters - which would result in less 'mains' being on the field? Please elaborate your concerns.

Technical, yes I guess this is true. But you can fly largest size of ship (except titan, but this is sort of special case) in like 1-2 month of training or some thing like this (not long). Plus with T3 ships, there are small class of ship that will blow noob small ship out of water. And experience player will also frequent fly each ship size, since each size has role and you need many role in fleet. The fact that battleship can not easy kill frigate is not why noob does not die in EVE. Noob does not die in EVE because he is never leaving high sec. If noob went to low/null, he will become obliterated even if he is in frigate (and everywhere in Haven is effective null).

Will some player quit game if they are kill? Yes.
Would this player quit game eventually anyway? Yes, it is obvious not game for him.
If a high level player meets this noob, is he likely to kill him? I do not think so.
If noob does become kill, is he hard to recover? No.
Can noob prevent to be killed by this player? Yes.

This is game that will punish playing poorly. I am still basically noob player and have been playing off and on since 2010 and have never died in this game. And I have met player much better than me, he is just knocking me out and stealing some item and letting me go. Beside, even if I do become kill, it is not problem because I do not put character I can not afford to losing into risk situation. I think this is issue that is much larger problem in your mind than in the real live.

A lot of core mechanics would need to be completely overhauled for that to work. I doubt many people would like to spend time rebuilding their base every few month.

Depends. People get bored of their bases fairly quickly and get really active once they start building something new. Tbh. I spend a lot of time on building new projects and stuff each world to try out new things. Some of my plotmates gone really inactive once they have finished building stuff.
The major problem is that building and teraforming is really costly, slow and time-consuming. If the new would would have 4 times larger inventory, 4x times faster building and digging speeds, then it would not be such an issue.

I am not that pro-reset person, like Moisture is. However, I think that regular re-sets could resolve the issue of the server becoming too stale.
On the other hand, if the devs would do something meta-changing each month (like in games like DoTA2), the game would keep being interesting and dynamic. For instance, declare the month of the dry weather or something like that, so the trees would be very easy to cut down. So people will concentrate on cutting the trees down asap. The week of the fast building, so people would shift to build stuff quicker and etc. Making a week of the mega-beasts, so the animals would be much harder to kill, but give much higher quality loot, so the villages would spend time on hunting together. Or a week of foraging, so anything you harvest would give you 4x times what it usually gives.
It is not something mega-hard to do, imho. Fairly cheap thing, but makes the game more dynamic.

I'm not opposed to world resets being scheduled if it is done properly. With Have's style however that would have to be a certain percentage of players have reach the maximum abilities or something along those lines. Just setting times wont work as some people like to savor the game or dont have as much time. If they are paying customers they too should be allowed their time to enjoy things, even if slower than others.

And in the fourth year nobody invited Uncle Bob ... :)

Also there is still a permanent world ... when "campaigns" are running for certain time ...

btw. what would happen if loftar and jorb get 7 mio funding ... :o

btw. 2.5 is crowdfunding ... so how much saying do the investors have ... ?!?

oh oh oh i botted all the way to end game that fast ... now i'm bored ... reset reset reset

i wonder why i still have fun being in the same area since minute one of W7 and still maintain the village build in the first weeks ...
... it's more the way of others playing than lack of content that make many players go away ...

in my opinion only a PvP/PvE enabled server plus a PvE only server would keep many ppl playing steady ... epensing isn't very recreational for a lot of people

While the idea of a PvE server has appeal it raises the problem of how to deal with griefers.

joining by invites of minimum 3 player trust votes only ( ;) )

no criminal acts possible

sure betrayal can happen, boats can still get hijacked, someone can grief away the animal your hunting ... but that's all filed "shit happens"
(typical countermeasures like pre villager village, or even totally immediate imobility when exiled or taken claim rights away*: what's the point of will to grief if you can't move ...)

at last there won't be real hurt and damage

sieges and that shebang i consider PvP anyways

*could be a part of much asked Village Management tools - make more villagers able to care and take over duties which now only LS and chief can do)

I think that's spot on.
The real problem are alts. Without them, players would interact more because they would need to rely on each other to progress, and progress in general would be slower. Even combat would be fun because it would be meaningful and risky. We wouldn't have murder alts, storage alts, lone hermits with full industry, several villages across the map. More importantly, this would be a mmorpg as advertised and not a RTS.
I'm totally for limiting one character per account and paying for entry access.
