Give them big enough meadow to roam around and feed from. Should make life easy, only when you turn to the cruelty of jailing them into small pens you'll have to work to stop them from starving.

How about we make scythes harvest 1,2,3,x tiles at 10,40,90,x q?

Another option might be to change the formulas for items -> swill.

I wanted to fill some extra food troughs, so I went and hunted a wagonload of moose and deer. I chopped them up and discovered 1 steak = 1 carrot = 5 seeds = 1 cherry = 1 foraged item. Shouldn't some things make more swill than others? That might make it possible to have choices on how to keep your animals fed instead of "forcing" you to farm.
