It's not the same thing though. Last world there wasn't a pay per char model. Anyone could make a new account, stuff the alt with curios, and use it for whatever before the free hours were up. At any rate, a single-character system would only work with a larger playerbase.

I know 2 people who have had their games added on Steam. Neither were particularly huge or successful games and neither took longer than a year to make. Although they're not allowed to state exact sales and such, according to steamspy, one has made over $100,000 (in about 2 months no less) and the other close to $1 million (before steams cut and taxes obviously).
It only costs $100 to make use of Steam Greenlight and you are pretty much guaranteed 10,000 sales if your game is greenlit.

More money for the devs, more people playing the game, and more visibility in a major game catalogue? I can't see any downside on this.

There are lots of examples like those you mention. Survivalcraft, for instance, has only one dev, rarely has updates or even posts on the dev blog to show, and it has already sold at least 60k copies (I'll even bet the final number is four times that). There are much worse games making more money and I think that's actually a bit unfair.

Such is live. People enjoy to buy shit.

I will say, one downside form putting game on steam right now is you can only put game on steam one time. Once game steps onto ''main stage'' of world, it will be seen by many player. If these player do not like game, they will never play it, even if game is made better later. There is only one chance for making these first impression. Will the chance became squandered by using it with game in current state?

About 1.5 years ago me and my friend played a game we bought (!) on Steam. We played it for a month or two, daily. It literally had no options menu, not to speak about any meaningful lengthy content. The game economic system got changed DRASTICALLY (like, "start from scratch 'cause all you have now doesn't work or worthless" type of deal) TWISE during that month. But the game's idea was very appealing to us so we just kept on playing in hopes of changes.

I still visit that game's page sometimes. And we would still be playing it. But there were no updates (not even hats or salads) for a year now. And it's still getting, like, 30% positive feedbacks and reviews.

If Hafen would be released on steam it'd make a very, very good "first impression". All the frustrating things happen, like, a month into game; most starting mechanics, bugs and content have been licked to perfection. Even the combat system is sound at starting level.

It's all about comparison. Is hafen perfect? Nope, far from it. Is it ready to be steamed? For a good few months already it is, and it will stand out as a well-thought and original nishe game.

I use to buy a lot of early access games at steam mainly from small devteams (sure i have to have a certain interest in the game and be it just an unique graphic style) even when i don't play the games right now ... just because Steam gives me a simple option to pay without creditcard or Paypal to support small devteams ... but this is given by Seatribe Store aswell ... so why should i bother Steam sharing revenue when i could give it to loftar and jorb nearly direct?

I don't think Steam would do HnH well yet ... danger of too many downvoting voices and thus more pressure ... there are sure more ways to do advertising ...
email your favourite game tester (online and paper), email curator groups at Steam ...

Back to topic - Lady Goo is right that there has to be more content for Veteran players but also you have to keep newcoming casuals in mind (for those it's already complicated enough to see through and hold on - besides the ever dangling sword of fun takers over their heads) ... and that's a very twisted bizness ;)

That crowfall looks kinda neat. Also me and some m8s have been playing Gloria Victus a bit. Although its not free yet (heard they might go free soon) and its pretty buggy. It has a lot of potential though, looting system for example is interesting, basically you get "loot points" which allow you to loot a certain amount of items. If a person is of your faction and you kill them, you will only have a few loot points and in turn will only be able to loot maybe 1 good item or a few so-so items. On the other hand if you go traitor by attacking one of your own faction and die while traitor (10 min ish buff or something) then other people can loot you and will have a ton of "loot points". If you kill enemy faction players you have a pretty good amount of loot points as well. Simple enough but I thought it was a cool idea.
Ohhh that's how I make a sig, cool

Steam does not work for hnh.
In its current state its too early to go on steam.
It would probably get more players for some time. But not for long. People will quit because of no updates, and game mechanics.

A Tale in the Desert has a pretty good method for dealing with this. Players can elect Demi-Pharaohs that have ay office length. Each DP elected gets 3 bans that can be used however. In general, these bans aren't used nefariously. They could be, but players have to answer to the rest of the player base, too. I'm not saying it'd work here (probably wouldn't due to ease of alting), but it's a start of an idea.
