Something similar to how the Wurm premium service works could be used here; in there how it works is that free accounts can play as long as they like and do mostly everything (They can't own deeds which is like a claim), and all of their abilities/skills/stats are capped at a certain level, they can't gain past it and are stuck there. If you go free, they are reverted to that level and regain their own levels after you subscribe and premium up again.
I think that would be fine considering how the game works with permadeath, a lot of the time is based off your beginning and settling to grow, which can easily consume most of your hours for a month. From then and on, if you enjoy and like the game enough, you could subscribe.
Also, the price is a little high for the fact it's an eternal alpha, and the nature of the game where you can pretty much lose all progress in an instant. I'd lower it to 10/month at least. I'd also suggest a bit of more freetime for the current community (I.e the next two weeks are free for everyone to play), mostly because this is a time of discovery and figuring out how the heck everything works (Which I love! Don't get me wrong), and it seems unfair to force people to pay in order to actually be able to figure out everything, not to mention the likelihood of restarting and server issues/bugs we will encounter.
By the way, I'd suggest having any premium account be able to keep the old party arrow-tracker to any other account, so two friends can enjoy the game together without the fear of bots/alts swarming to a spot.
