Nah unless the damage is absurdly high it won't act as any kind of real deterrent, people will gladly soak up any amount of SHP damage (As long as they don't K.O.) to ruin a newbies experience. SHP damage will not ever act as a deterrent. LP loss however VERY much would because then they have to sacrifice character progression for it. So they start prioritizing targets that actually positively impact their character progression, and not just attack people who have nothing to offer. I would have the LP loss be very low for K.O.ing so people don't get punished for base defense but i would have it very high for theft.

because the guy who made the thread keeps insisting the sole reason people gank is for "misery" I gotta be honest I couldnt really give a fuck how the walking loot bags are feeling they are just NPCs that quite often drop good loot

In all honesty red handed being reduced to 20 minutes made it infinitely less punishing to gank everybody, I dont mind walking around for 20 minutes but an hour made you hesitate to pull the trigger

as a criminal it would deter me, hp is the energy bar of haven that lets you keep playing the crime game
HP will timegate you on how much crime you can commit and that can be adjusted
lp is so easy to get for an experienced player it would need to be something crazy for it to matter

You also cant really tell who has something to offer based on how the look right now since most valuable items are not visible. You are wrong in assuming this.

I'm still waiting for an answer to a simple question. You've described your encounter with a person who looked promising loot-wise, and you KO'ed that character only to discover that the items were, as you've put it yourself, "worthless". Did you or did you not then proceed to take those items?

Also, don't misrepresent my words, anyone can read what I'm saying and it's that inflicting misery is the MAIN goal of a ganker, not his SOLE purpose. That's why the answer to my question is importand for the context. I'm not trying to "gotcha!" you or anything, you've brought up a gank yourself, you've described the loot as "worthless" yourself, therefore, it was of no value for you to take it. So... did you? ;)

This Executioner guy does not seem like a new player at all, especially the way they type it is the exact same garbage style of discord gang.

At least try and be genuine if you’re going to have a discussion.
