Why not add 4 units of soil to the spot where the tree is planted (or the pot emptied)?

Was going to suggest composters at some point lol. Take those extra crops ect... make soil to use.

That would make sense, it's not like the sapling eats all of the dirt from the pot. It could make for some ugly tree farms though, unless you can level it while the saplings are there, and then it's getting kind of annoying.

Maybe the used pots could be left with depleted soil in them? Or just regular soil, even. It's not like it's suddenly useless because it once touched a tree, just add water.

Is the tree planted at the intersection of four grid squares? It appears when landscaping you are interacting with the intersections.
Add back one unit of soil in each square when tree is planted.
