The Stone Wall

Postby DaniAngione » Thu Oct 01, 2015 5:14 am

Are there plans for a stone wall?

I would guess there are, especially with all those tasty quarry/stone biomes lying around :3

Anyway....
I can't decide if it should be stronger than Brickwall or weaker than brickwall. I suppose stronger, wouldn't make sense to add a tier in-between. Especially because everyone would have brickwall by the time it is added anyway. Though stone can be arguably easier to acquire than clay/bricks, it could require larger stones - like "stone slabs" (you cut a boulder into a slab (like you do for Querns or Runestones) and then you place the slab inside the Building Plot.) That would complicate things a bit.

Also, I think it would be cool - if possible - for Stone walls to allow players on top of them. I think that some shenanigans could achieve that if they're limited to straight segments (as all walls are) and to the grid lock... Wouldn't mind the limitation if it allowed us to walk on walls :)

Anyway, not really a concrete idea... Just some loose, random thoughts. Stone walls + archery = win.

PS:
Stone walls + new "Drop" option on Boiling Cauldrons filled with Tar on top of walls = DOUBLE WIN.

Stone walls could be better than wood pals, not better than brick though. Stone walls being able to walk on could implement castles and kinddoms sooner though.

Stone walls are an old request. I to hope they get included at some point. :)

I would like stone fence types for more fancy cosmetic stuff.

I'd like more wall types, but I don't like how they are presently without further distinction than better/worse.

Thanks for the reply! :) I understand the concern.

It would be interesting to have all walls useful somehow, instead of providing a linear progression through tiers (like Picket - Palisade - Brickwall)

In that sense, what Bowshot said about a stone wall not being stronger than a Brickwall is interesting if it is possible to walk on it like a suggest. Because that way people could have the choice to go for a weaker wall in terms of resilience BUT one that gives them the advantage of being able to shoot/attack invaders from the inside.

Each wall could be given a specific role/advantage over the others, making them work more like a choice rather than a linear progression. Can't think anything for palisades now, for example, but I suppose you know what I meant.

Oh, and since we're into walls - and I completely love the new experience/world/lore/feel in the new Haven, I'd like to suggest something that would be lovely and (I suppose) would be possible with the new terraforming system: walls like we see in the old scottish 'brochs':

Or similar to the old ring forts from your scandinavian ancestors :P

The key thing on them is being a wall that is tall for someone outside but 'leveled' for everyone inside. In terms of gameplay, think about living inside a fortified cliff/highland :P
Anyway, just ideas for the future :)

Maybe stone walls could be two or three tiles thick (allowing for walking on top), with each of the two/three tiles being slightly weaker than a section of brick wall, but needing to be bashed separately. I also like the idea of the individual layers of stone wall collapsing outward when destroyed and having a 50/50 chance to damage the ram and those using it, while creating rubble that must be cleared before attacking the next layer.

Buttressed artificial highlands, yes! Maybe you could even layer them to go beyond the normal height limits of terraforming and make artificial mountain fortresses.

Didn't find this thread before making my own, then deleted mine after finding this. Basically yes - stone walls should be a thing. Hardness should vary depending on the stone type used. Recipe should involve stone and mortar. Mortar is the thing - what to use of the game's resources? Bringing back sand would be nice. Water ofc. Then maybe soil or clay. History has a wide variety of mortar types.

Barring the big stone wall idea, we could at least get some nice visual garden walls, no mortar needed, just stone. Harder than a roundpole fence, but still breakable by hand with decent strength.

I agree with the idea that 'moar walls' doesn't necessarily need to equal a 'better/worse' scenario.

'moar fences' follows the same idea. It would make sense for a stone fence to be stronger than a pole fence, but that's not the reason I'd choose to build them.

Especially if the wall cared what kind of stone you used to build it. Just sayin'.
