In the 2nd case, their friends can simply use the party arrow and can teach them the basics of the game and specially to move far away from he current spawning point. That case is not as problematic as the first case. It is the players from the first case that get a horrible starting experience since most bushes have no berries in them, plenty of settlements everywhere, etc.

the problem with the 2nd case is that their friends have absolutely no idea where they spawn, so friends dont know how long they are forcing them to walk. in case you havent experienced this journey as a new player, it can be bearable when you know you will have to be walking for certain hours at the start - or they wouldnt start it hating the walking idea before starting. when you hear "maybe an hour if lucky, up to more than 10 hours or possibly longer", what do you think the reaction would be from a completely new player? what about when he or she cant cross a river and no boat, and has to walk around for long without any ideas? or would you be fine with just walking alone knowing nothing about the game, only because you are talking to your friends? at least, if the spawn area is somewhat limited, your friend could make a new char and find each other within the spawning area by party arrow soon enough, and then start walking together to the goal for long hours.

when spawning area does not have much resources, that can lead players away to decide to walk away from the center, they just need some easy guidance when starting. and this may just be me, but for some reason, i think it would be a lot easier to experience meeting criminals in the beginning to learn what can happen (and decide to move far on their own will) than knowing nothing about the system until months later.

the problem i see here is that you all make it sound like there would be no griefing and no raiders if new players spawn totally random.
