Any reason why you can't dig for infinite amounts of it here by widening the pit?

not that I can tell, seems to work the same way as dirt.
Edit: Aside from the not refilling. I guess technically if you dug a fuck load you would run into something that kept you from widening the pit? Seems like a shit load of chariots though...

Pits are not infinitely wide. Or we go by a different definition of infinite. Also soil is everywhere clay pit a lot fewer.

For all practical purposes they are, no? You can dig further down by lowering the terrain around the pit, I mean.

Just let us dump soil on it :P Since we'll dig anyway.

I don't think lowering the terrain around the pit is "practical"

Maybe you could implement something that when digging there is a chance that clay will be uncovered, the tile then transforms into acre clay.
Soil should also be able to transform into sand, only when you can dig, level or pave sand of course.
The same could apply to acreclay of sand that when you dig, the tile has a chance to be transformed into another soillayer.

The transformation chance should increase when you dig longer on the same spot.
The chance could also depend on the type of biome where you dig, as some biomes have different soils and soil layers.
This way clay and sand become infinite and you could see some interesting dynamics in the landscape. Kinda like trees transform grasland into forestsoil.
