Spawn stones in noob grid every now and then

Postby ArvinJA » Thu Nov 12, 2015 11:42 am

I recently tried to get my 12 year old sister to play, but she couldn't find any stones, so she didn't even get to craft a stone axe. It might have been an anomaly, she might just have spawned into a weird part of the noob grid, but if stones aren't replenished that is probably what the entire grid will look like. Big boi players don't have this problem of course, as you get piles and piles of stones from smelting, but noobs are sorely affected by the lack of stones, so much so in fact, that it creates a situation where the game becomes even more grueling to start playing, and therefor also harder to recommend to people.

If people doubt that this is a problem at the moment, I can guarantee it will become more and more of a problem. Since as time goes to infinity, surface boulders go to zero, and at an alarming rate in the starting zone.

Simple, but not elegant solution: spawn more surface boulders every now and then, it's ad-hoc but works until a proper fix can be thought up/coded.

Well those same stone could be used by existing groups and thus never get to new players. I would more suggest a options for new characters under a certain number of days old that they could forage a river bank for stones. That way new players can get them and it goes only to them. Yes spawn is rather bare of rocks.

It probably is an issue in the starting area's and could do with tweaking them there to spawn at a faster rate ... in my area they seem to spawn pretty fast though, I keep clearing them, (on projects) and next time I look there are three more to take it's place .... you know they also 're-grow' (replenish?) if you leave some stone from the core remaining.

Wow I actually didn't know they respawned/replenished already. The rate should just be tweaked for the noob grid then. :)

This is indeed a problem I have noticed on my character.

I am still very new to Haven, and it took me around 2-3 hours of walking away from spawn to find a surface stone, and even then they were quite rare.
However, the further away I get, the more stone I find. It did discourage me a little bit at first though, since I could barely progress further without a stone axe, and I had to spend that amount of time just mindlessly walking in one direction.

It might not be considered a big issue to Jorb & Loftar, but from a new player's perspective, it is very bad.

I think this is probably best as it forces people to leave the spawning area, and I know I walked for about 2 hours before finding a boat and sailing away, eventually found an abandoned farm to stay in until i get myself some better skills.

It was a bit bare on the stone side :D

The issue should be slightly lessened now if they can find a grey "mountain" ground biome. There are usually a few splotches of it around. You can dig stone now, though it is an incomplete implementation (tools don't affect speed, and no stam drain).

You can dig stones on mountain biomes now.

This WAS a problem and arguably still is, since "grey patches" aren't super common in the noob area and mountains are nonexistent.

IMO, let us dig for stone in caves too?
