At first, I should warn you about some moments. This post may be too large and not good organized, and English is not my native language, so it may content some grammar and lexical errors. Keep it in mind while reading, and tell me your suggestions how to improve this topic (preferably do it by PM).
So, lets start.
Im new in this game and the more aspects I have discovered, the more I like it (and the crafting/recipe discovery system seems to be the best I ever seen (and I've seen a lot)). Still some moments make me angry (like *better trees require better Herbalist Table, which require better boards, which requires better trees*), Im mostly happy spending my time in H&H. And for me, there is a 3 main directions, in which you can go: The Exploration/Discovery/Foraging, Resource Gathering and Setting up your Base. I want to talk about the last one, speciffically about Housemaking. I just built my very first GreatHall and entered it with my main character. He looked over all this empty space, closed his eyes and saw how it can be filled in future - big spacy dining zone in the main room with some trophies on the walls, comfotable bedrooms upstairs and nice warm kitchen in basement, where all those delicious meals were cooked. And, be sure, he was smiling at that moment. He was happy and full of energy to make his vision to become true. And one week later, my Yarl steped into finished GreatHall and all he saw was a neverending rows of cupboards with all the crap the village had. And he start to cry. The Mighty Warrior crying like a baby. That's a sad true of recent H&H's Housing. But it could be changed, so the dreams of my Chieftan can became true.
Lets look at every room separately.
=Basement=
HOW IT IS NOW. The main problem with kitchen-inside-building is fireplace. It can't be built even in basement, so there is no point to build any kitchen workstation there because of firesource lack (if you're not fund of these olympic runs with lighted torches across all your rooms. So you place your fireplace somewhere outside, and then you build all your kitchen workstation near it. And then you build your food storages near them. And all this thing is related to basement blacksmithing (though I think blacksmithing should stay outside, but I saw some posts about basement blacksmithing). So we use our basements just for storage space (and some experienced players use it for mythical "chease-making").
HOW IT COULD BE. The problem of fireplaces inside the house was mantioned in some topics from time to time. And mostly, there is a phrase like "You should be an idiot to make a fireplace in your basement, just below wooden floorings" and it is true while we are speaking about that fireplace we have in game now. But if there will be another fireplace like this http://www.gregmix.com/2011snowstorm%20124.jpg, there will be no problems at all (provided picture even have roasing spit/cauldron installed on it (yeap, it may be too cheaty though)). It may cost some metall bars/nuggets, glue and bricks to be built, but it is end-game content anyway, so it is ok. Just one little addition could bring the life back to our basements and therefore for dining rooms (see below). And though this a main idea, there are some other tiny additions that could make our kitchens little more homely. Like wall stockpiles for raw food. Take a look a this picture http://fialka.tomsk.ru/forum/gallery/albums/userpics/18580/DSC07645.jpg. What we need is one metal nugget (to produce a nail) and some strings to create an empty line, that can contain some amount of oninions/carrots/beetroots/any little stuff/even garlick (please, add garlick!). It may not be able to store a full floor stockpile, maybe 10-15-20 max, but it could be very useful for cooking from the best ingredients without having those piles of food in our "homely" kitchen. And the last one - ovens. Bring them to the basement too - there billions of ovens built inside all across the world, so why we can't build them in our basements?..
That's all (for now) about kitchens, so lets go upstairs to our main floor and look what can be changed there.
=Dining Hall=
HOW IT IS NOW. As we already knew, our dining table is located outside, because there is where our kitchen is located. So our great hall is full of cupboards with "needed stuff". Yeap, maybe some dried animal hides on walls as a thropies, but you should agree it looks wierd to put trophies in a storagerooms. And what can be done here?
HOW IT COULD BE.Once we have a firesource in our building, our dining tables will move into our halls providing us with a dry warm space for good old feasts. And animal hides on walls will look exact on their places in such room. The greathall main room will get back its forgotten destination. And if we could have some wooden boards for trophies (animal heads), it can become even more Great. Plus, add some weaponracks/armorstands for warlike vikings or let us plant some trees in big clay/stone pots for the druidic ones. And one little thing to add some athmosphere - let us pave indoor floors with straw. And once we have made our best dishes in basement, and consumed them in our great hall, lets go upstairs once again to get some sleep or work a little.
=Upstairs=
HOW IT IS NOW. I see no really problems with upstairs room at that moment. You can place some(all?) tailor's workstations and cupboards with silkeggs to make a nice cloth-producing zone there. Or you can build one more general storage room (if basement/main room space is not enough for you (and in that case - stop collecting all the crap around!)). Or you could place hearthfires of all citizens there and proudly call it "The Bedroom!". And that's all.
HOW IT COULD BE. I don't really think that this space should be changed in some way (maybe just not was thinking about it for needed time), but some changes could be done. Oh, not literally "some" - I have only one idea at this moment. I call it "Private zone". It is a structure that can be build only inside, take 2x3 space, and cosists of three functional elements - a bed (when it will be implemented (or should there be "if"?)) to sleep , a hearthfire for teleportation and a cupboard for storage. These three elements is surrounded by small wall. And it is private. Absolutely. The only person who build it can access it. So you can have one tiny zome which is yours only in this big friendly (but sometimes so annoying) community.
That's all for now. If this post can be read by someone who could prove he undrestood my rough language and not so clear ideas, I could add some more ideas later. Thanks for your attention.
P.S. It may seems like my main thesis is "it is all wrong, do as I suggest", but it is just of my bad English. My main thought was "I love the things, they are, but maybe it could be a little better".
