I hate the way it works now, wish they'd go back to the old system of simply revealing the spot to you by highlighting it when you're dowsing.

Just drop the rod and spam well sign every 2-3 tiles. Spend 10 mins to find a well with this method.

I dislike it and prefer the old way as well, it's incredibly difficult to tell where a suitable water source may be located or if it's even working as intended at all.

The moment you get that message you can place a well, if the water isn't too deep in the area.

While the old mechanic was quicker (just equip the rod and see the well spots) the current one works, and is in itself not that bad to revert it (how often do you build wells?).

Compared to the last one is zero intuitive. In order to do what you say you need to plow or place stone. Then you realize you cant build a well and continue. I tried when we first came to our current location and today.
Last world i did what APXE says and it worked, and ive tried this world and i havent been lucky.
Once i get home ill pave the whole area where we are and ill spawnclick everywhere. But this system sucks.

Being able to build a well on any terrain would help the current system a lot, part of the reason I find it so annoying is being required to not just hand plow the tile i'm placing on but the tiles around it too because "you cannot build on this terrain" since I didn't pave/plow the spaces around the one tile I want to put it on. Happens on like every single forest terrain out there.

What are you saying? Just try to spam "build a well" every where? I always get "this terrain is not correct" when trying.

Maybe you're trying to find it on the rocks?

To convert forest like terrains dig one unit of soil and put it back, this gives 2x2 area big enough and compatible with a well.
