NOTE: Some language in this suggestion is ambiguous. To be clear, everything I am talking about is related to interaction with the player inventory and the inventory of containers, and nothing is referring to placing buildable objects/machines on world tiles.
I propose that implementing one or more of the following is necessary:
1. Center items on the cursor when picked up from inventory. If this sounds like a bad idea, consider it actually happening and how you'd react to it.
>> I feel as though this would contribute to a major sense of consistency. Objects hanging off the cursor every which way is never easier to negotiate.
2. Modify the bizarre behavior where the inventory tile that the cursor actually clicks has nothing to do with where it will be placed.
>> Your game puts the object where the object is centered. The transparent, wispy object that gets lost in the background and obscured by the item quality tooltip.
>> As an aside, it would be nice if the item tooltip would not show while the item is picked up, or would only show the name of the object.
>> Also, I am not sure if the exact criteria I stated for where an item will land is correct, which is exactly why I have dropped a few flasks into rivers over the years.
3. Have the client decide where to place an object based on the tile the cursor clicked, jumping left/right/up/down to fit if there is a suitable space overlapping the clicked tile.
>> The speed of using the inventory is already frustrating because of net lag, but if placing the item was more guaranteed to work, it would save a lot of frustration.
This isn't always a problem, but I'll give a specific example. I was just trying to split some blocks for sticks. I was holding two traveler's sacks, so I had to remove one to equip an axe. Two blocks were in the way, so I had to move them. Despite playing this game for years, the rarity with which I have to deal with 2x1 items has left me unprepared. All I managed to do the first two times I tried to move them was to put them in the wrong place and pick up a different block. This is because I center my cursor where I want to place the item, but I picked them up off-center. You could tell me to center the shadow, but I am incapable of understanding how you could take that sentence seriously.
