I've been thinking that some of the gear that we have and use should get worn out eventually. Everything feels too static at the moment.
Scythes, shovels, axes and saws and other tools should have a durability. They should break after some amount of using them. Quality should increase their maximum durability. A way to repair them wouldn't be terrible, but I would rather just see these tools wear out. If repairing is a thing I would say tools should take a quality hit.
Swords should have a durability/wear and a sharpness amount. Lets say the sharpness goes from 0-100. At 100 sharpness it will do 100% of its damage, and loses .5% of its damage per missing sharpness. So a fully damaged sword would deal 50% of its maximum damage. Swords would need to be sharpened using a whetstone. Sharpening a sword should make its durability take damage. So after enough times sharpening a sword it will eventually break. Not against other tools like the ax working off this sharpening system either, feel free to opine.
Shields obviously should have some sort of wear as well, but I haven't thought out how that might work.
Bows could either just have a durability, or they could have something a bit more complex. The string on it could have its own durability and need to be replaced. It would be neat to have a bow work in a similar way to our fishing poles. Don't want to derail my original idea too much, but having 2 separate crafted parts for bows would be really cool. Bowstrings and whatever it is you call the rest of the bow. Both could have separate durability, or perhaps just the bowstring.
I'm suggesting this because equipment feels boring and stale. You make one item and use it forever. I don't want things to be too tedious, just to require a little more interaction. Durability should be high enough(or scale with quality well enough) that equipment isn't breaking every day. A good scythe should a few weeks.
