I haven't noticed a suggestion like this anywhere (but I might have not searched well enough). Maybe it would be possible to texture some stockpiles depending on it's content, if it contains only one type? Examples might include stone, ore and fabric (maybe bough?). For instance a limestone stockpile would then be easily distinguishable from basalt stockpile. And if it contains a mix, it would simply fall back to it's default texture?
