More Gear Visible on Character

Postby Jesus_Smith_Nandez » Sun Jun 26, 2016 3:58 am

Title. I often find myself lugging around trav sacks, sword, shield, rings, metal axe.... all these things and my character exactly the same. You would think that, while not using them, a hearthling would keep his sword in a scabbard, his axe on his belt, his dagger in a sheath, his shield across his back, etc. It would be great if these were visible on your character at all. Nothing more annoying than a naked "noob" pulling a sword out of his ass and killing you with it.

Maybe there could be special craft-able items that would be required to carry these items in your inventory in the first place. How do you carry a sword in your backpack without anyone spotting it anyway? This could give the poor man's belt and hunters belt an actual use outside of appearance.

Example A: Germanic iron age warrior
Image
Notice the gear on his belt (including an axe) as well as the scabbard for his sword.

Example B:
Image
Notice the shield across his back while not in use, and his sword in his scabbard again.

It is also worth noting that swords are generally a sidearm but that's a thread for another time.

Check the list of things to stop posting ideas about. Wearing things on belts is #3.

Some customization would be cool, ofcourse, but I doubt it can be automated like "if you're lugging things in your backpack they show". Just imagine how would a trader look who's transporting a shipment of 10 swords and 20 stone axes to his trade stand...

Listen man I put so much work and thought into this thread and you pull one of these. The thread isn't even about carrying things on belts, it's about the appearance of your character in the first place.

Surely there must be some kind of downside to carrying 20 swords, come on now...

I imagine it would limit at 1 anyway, more as to show that someone could be dangerous and also to prevent

i guess there could be like a "vanity" slot but idk it's mostly pointless and devs aren't doing anything until combat/floating point coords is implemented, which could take years

I can see that you put a lot of effort in this suggestion. The other way to think about is making gear visibility more like a boolean visibility of weapons: if a character has any weapon (or weapons) in his bags, he's displayed with a sheathed sword on his hip. A shield on back would be cool with all those pretty pictures we can put on them, but what about cloak then, it'll take a lot of effort for those two things to simultaneously look decent ingame (same goes for battleaxe, where would we put that thing on a character?)

As with all the gear showing and distinguishing between types, I say nay. As with gilding showing on your gear that was discussed few days ago, showing inventory items on gear would just turn developed characters into walking piles of junk.
