Strengths:
- Widely used to transport various items within short distances;
- The cost is low enough to be built by the noobs;
- In previous worlds they have been used to hunt animals as a group.
- Customization is available.
Weaknesses:
- Nowadays they are being replaced by the combination of a horse+cart combination. Horse+carts have higher flexibility, speed, cheaper to craft. It is safer to hunt, gather materials by traveling on a horse+cart as well. Also, there is no reason to leave your base for longer distances to hunt, since animals re-spawn every 15 minutes. You can just spend 10 minutes on hunting the nearby minimaps, go back to your base, stretch and do other things, then go for the second round. Whereas the wagon+ox is much slower, harder to maneuver between the trees, and you have no chances to escape from your enemy (both mounted or on their feet).
- Some would argue that the oxcarts could be used for trading purposes. I have done 3-4 trips (8 minimaps long) to the local market on a wagon. Then, I have switched to using the direct crossroad and teleporting the goods in my inventory + boat with 2 large chests. It was fairly quick, safe, and I did not have to travel all the way back on a wagon. Moreover, wagons cannot cross the rivers as well. The rafts take a long time to do so.
Opportunities:
- Horses could also pull the wagon and give it a higher speed. That way travelling on a wagon could be a viable option + you can always mount your leashed horse to escape. This will make the wagons more useful + people would be able to travel for a longer distances for the quests and hunting.
- Wagon teleportation could also make them even more useful, since TP via crossroads helps to travel across rivers and be more safe. Setting up new settlements, projects, laying the siege and etc. could be much easier.
Threats:
- In the current situation, the wagons will be used only within the village or the nearby territory. We may forget about the times when we would travel on a wagon in groups to hunt or trade for far distances.
