Bigger drawback would be that a round world can't be expanded.

The map itself doesn't have to be round.
Just make it so that edge of map teleports you to the other side thus making it feel like a round world.

And how would you determine the fraction lines that would be created when the world expands?

why not? It should be generated with this functionallity in mind, bu still can work as azrid described in square world.

The same way it has always been. Add on the outer layers creating new outer lines where teleportation to the other side happens.

In my opinion all levels of the underground should contain something interesting beyond ore/stone/gems and the underground in general should have its own biomes, flora and fauna, resources, etc. Further levels for added difficulty and rarer metals would certainly be nice but I don't think that means anything interesting underground has to apply only to a 6th or lower level.
