Give light sources a use

Postby jordancoles » Sun Oct 09, 2016 7:28 am

I have always been disappointed with how under-used the light system has been in all of Seatribe's titles. Custom clients quickly remove daylight and weather effects and torches/light sources basically become dead content.

I would like to see some sort of buff added that would be based on the current amount of light near your character. Why can I perfectly craft a detailed ring in a dark mine shaft? How can I mine the most ore possible from a cave tile if I am in complete darkness?

On top of your attribute/tool cap, I would like to see a small boost added as well based on lighting in your area. Say your attributes cap out a ring at quality 85, a well-lit room should buff that cap up to 90.

Assume you are in a mine that has no light at all, you mine a tile and get 4 pieces of ore out of it. Now assume that you were wearing a lit miner's helmet when you mined that tile. Because of your ability to see the ore in the wall, you got 6-7 pieces instead of 4.

I'm sure there are other instances where lighting could play a part, but these are just some general examples.

this seems like it could be an okay idea tbh
Specifically like the mining idea but don't like the crafting one. It just directly adds more work less then it adds more content.

How so? Everything is as it was before, except you have the option to add a light source for an extra boost. It's no different from smoking tobacco to boost psych in legacy. You're not losing from this, it's just an incentive to use a light source. Also, we now have candelabrums which burn for like 48 hours or some crazy shit so it's not exactly difficult to find a light source atm

I just don't like how it's an unnused aspect of the game which is overlooked because of custom clients

Custom clients should be removed in long term to even the play ground.

Not possibru, just give light sources a function so that it iwill at least be somewhat relevant

I tend argue the other way around, to fuck up nightvision really good:

  • Doing stuff in darkness should up to halve (in 100% darkness like underground, new moon at midnight could count as 90% darkness) output quantity (for everything that puts stuff into inventory, like mining, farming, digging with shovel) and quality (for crafting, butchering, ...).
  • Have a chance to injure yourself slightly (since you don't see what you're doing) when working in the darkness, the bigger the tool the worse it can get, make it an experience.
  • GObjs should not be rendered (=not sent from the server => not interactable with) at all outside a light source radius in complete darkness, with the exception of upward mineholes and outward cave entrances so you have a chance to leave the underground area in case your light goes out (server would still restrict movement through GObjs but not give them to the client).
  • Outside vision range (=render range, also in terms of GObj data given to the client) into unlit areas should shrink and/or get unrelieable with distance.
  • Let glimmermoss and cavebulb actually glow so you can find them in the dark,
  • Let us craft glimmermoss into a gilding that makes a wearable emit a small amount of light (like 5% of a torch, wearing multiple pieces adds up).

Just move light processing to server side so server only sends gobs that are not in too dark places.
