I can assure you most certainly that even a freshly spawned character with only the Hunting skill would have no trouble getting ant lewt.

The first time I was able to defeat Ants was today, after something like 2 weeks of playing, and with 20 str, 20 Unarmed Combat and 21 Constitution, and only because someone told me I could defeat them.
The biggest problem is that a player that see that he does 1 damage with his first attack to an enemy will be demoralized and think that they can't defeat that enemy.
