Books

parchment + parchment = book

And then please make it possible to copy them as we do with keys.
And also to add sketches to the parchments themselves.

Here's a precedent:

Cost should me more like:

Amount of parchments for the pages
Leather for the cover
Glue and fiber for the binding

Apart from decorative reasons, what uses should they have and how do you envision them to work (mechanic wise)?

Let us store our discovery and player descriptions to them

I was thinking more like parchment rolls or bound by a string somehow, since books as we know them are rather recent in Europe.

There's a bunch of ways they could be used really. Describing discoveries and players is nice. It could cost experience to be crafted so it wouldn't be too exploitable.
Maps are probably another good one. I'd certainly buy books that give me maps, and I'd craft my own too. It also encourages map exploration.
The devs could also write a basic book explaining the game and give it to new characters. Sevenless already said he would be willing to help with that, although that was quite a while ago.
And there's also the matter of giving players more tools to create in-game content. I've seen people collecting parchments and runestones they find since w7, so there's clearly an interest in this.

Larger topic.
