Now I'd like to revisit the idea and offer up some additional thoughts.
Have the volcanoes act as an unpredictable high Quality forge. Every day, or maybe ever hour, the Quality of the Volcanic Forge will change, but always being relatively high.
- The random variable will (hopefully) partially prevent the abuse of the forge.
- It can serve as the means of acquiring the highest Quality metal in the game. The risks being the randomness of it, and the fact that a Volcano is naturally dangerous!
- The forge wouldn't need coal to fuel. This would be an incentive even for noobs to use it.
- ( Maybe even throw in a special Anvil that can only be placed/made next to the Volcano? )
Lets put all sorts (or at least some) nasty critters that live nearby.
- Giant Spiders.
- Red Dragon. Come on, we have trolls, we need dragons at some point. What better way to introduce them with a burning mountain of lava?
- Vultures. (Okay, I'm not entirely sure how accurate it'd make sense for Vultures to hang around volcanoes)
Andisols / Volcanic Soil. Special soil with similar mechanics to Bat Guano. High Quality.
Rich in Minerals
- It's a Volcano, of course there should be lots of minerals in the surrounding area/ caverns.
- Diamonds. A good chance to introduce the valuable rock. Jewelry and Gilding of course.
+ Let us throw hearthling corpses into the volcano. It can act as a special burial.
