Animals/cows eat too much thread no 8934

22 milking/breeding cows = at least 4 feeding troughs to stay fed for a few days

A 20*58 beet field and a 26*68 carrot field are currently needed to feed this many cows without having to worry about them starting to starve.
So 1160 tiles for beetroots and 1768 tiles reserved for carrots :!: That's a lot of space to need in itself
That's 3 beets and 1 beetroot leaf / 3 carrots per tile harvested.
That is 1160 beetroot leaves, 3480 beets and fucking 5304 carrots :!: :!:
8784 individual units of food.
Sounds suuper fun

And that's not mentioning the like, 4 hours needed to harvest, replant and trough it all

The whole lot of trough material amounts to 8784 individual clicks that are required by the player to get their harvest into the trough. But that's just the troughing process alone.
This number of clicks doesn't include the replanting process, the time needed to pick up the items from the floor, clicks to drink water between harvests, etc.

Now, 8784 units of food. A food trough holds 2000 units.
4.4 troughs of food in the end of it all.
But do not fear you eager farmers, you. (!)
In just 2 days time, you get to do it all over again!

Why the fuck wouldn't people want to bot that process?

It's just insanely tedious to keep cows alive, and even if you're not doing cheese, keeping cows for their backpack storage can add up to a lot of time required to just keep them fed

In the new would could you increase the troughing value of beets/carrots/straw/etc per unit troughed?

This please. Just buffing it to legacy values would be good enough for me

You can use a wheelbarrow to put stockpiles of carrots/beets/whatever fodder you want into troughs. No need for 8k clicks.

:D

Think of the poor unfortunates without access to leather
Please leave

But yes you are right, it's not as extreme because of this. However, collecting, storing and then storing again into the trough it quite a long process for little reward other than having living livestock that isn't constantly shitting up your grass tiles

^^

Agree though ... livestock and the amount of farming and produce needed to feed them is by far the biggest chore in the game and detracts from a lot of the more fun things. Over my worlds here my farms have gotten smaller and smaller along with the amount of livestock I keep. This world I only kept the two best breeders, except for when I was breeding them for others, culling the rest, as it is just such a pain to upkeep them!

I think that in the new world, beets, straw, carrots, etc should be worth something like 3 units per item troughed instead of 1 unit

It's sort of crazy to expect average players to dedicate 2.5k+ tiles of safe space behind their walls to just feeding their modest livestock

Having Q not be nerfed from grass browsing would be nice. Seeing large fields of grass dedicated to livestock would be cool.

+500

It makes no sense, it comes to a point where sheep are eating thrice their weight per day just because their wool is fluffier, lol.

+1

I have to agree, and I must say I find it hard to reason out why they do eat as much as they do, both on the basis of realism and for the sake of good gameplay.

It makes no sense that animals would eat as much as they currently do, and it really detracts from the over-all fun of the game because the rewards from having animals are great, so you want to have them, but it's just such a pain to have to upkeep.

Also, I know this has been suggested before, but please allow us to "pause" our animals in some way for when we go on holidays and the like. It sucks that I have to find every single edible thing available at my home and dump them in throughs or expect to see 30-40% of my animals dead when I return from a weekend out of town. Adding a barn building or something like that where animals could be stowed and put on pause would greatly help with that issue.
