Alternatives to pay to win

Postby shadyg0d » Thu Jan 05, 2017 3:23 am

I know the new world starts in 2 days so this post is too late. I REALLY hate the idea of pay to win, and despite being really excited for a new world I probably will not play this world because of it. This thread is not for debating what "pay to win" means or if haven is pay to win. For all intents and purposes we're going to call it pay to win in this thread. This thread is for everyone who is disatisfied with the current system providing unfair benefits to unworthy players.

If there is ANY chance of changing the devs' minds before the world starts we must HURRY. Maybe they are not trying to come up with better ideas, maybe they can't see any alternative. Doesn't matter. Let's brainstorm for them.

So HOW can haven make money without offering unfair benefits? Do you guys have any suggestions? Can anything be done to make previously tried systems more lucrative(cosmetic items, pay to play, etc...)? Is there a completely new system we could try?

Question for you:

If you're playing casually, why would you care that other players are going to be "better" than you?

If you're loving this game and devoting many hours a day, don't you think this game is worth the $15 one time fee and $7/month sub?

It's a bit hard to reason about a solution without being allowed to ask what the problem is.

And just a recap on what Convenience is:
Crafting items;
Building constructions;
Chopping trees, wood blocks and sawing boards;
Fishing;
Butchering; and
Chipping stones.

Okay so you can do things in about half the time others can (though walls will still need time to gain soak) so nothing really different there. Maybe fishing I guess.

And you get an additional 50% FEPs so you can gain attributes slightly faster. Really I have seen free players grow faster then paid. This isn't too bad on the P2W scale. This isn't as bad as it was or if they had not scaled it back with the stacking bonuses. And honestly 22$ for the the first month and 7$ after is perfectly fine for my budget. Hell 7$ is fine as it is but I'm going to drop the extra to help support the game and get the extra bumps.

Going back to the main argument this is not like most other P2W games I've seen, COUGHDCUOCOUGH, All you would need to do is put in the work to make up for it.

Isn't the total for verified account and 1 month subscription like 22$?

Where the 30 day subscription is 7$? Which in my country is 63 SEK or about 15 minutes of work? How is that even "pay to win"? And the subscription is for 30 days or almost 25 cent per day, or about 30 sec of being at work, per day...
Not to be rude, but how damn poor are people playing this game?

So what do you do when shady mc person buys a few sub tokens and suddenly he has higher quality items than you even though he has played for like 5 minutes total
Because a friend did something like that (and shortly after quit, but yeah)

It's a shitty argument, I know, and I won't defend it, because I don't really personally care that much. But I suppose it's worth considering.

How the fuck is the current payment model anywhere remotely near pay to win? Christ have you people ever had to pay for anything?

I am going to guess he traded the sub tokens. Doesnt really work like that at world start since no one has anything yet. And then they are still playing catch up to get a base to the same level as the people he just sold the tokens to...

Well the subtokens does not really have a "value", you get what you get from it. If people want to trade items for subtokens, that's up to them.
What do you do about new people knowing powerful people and get free stuff? Same as with the subtokens.

I can buy 30 subtokens, but if there is nothing to trade them with, then it has no value. And as a free player, you can become good in a craft, and trade for a subtoken if you wish.
But this game is not pay to win, far from it. The cost is so low, and you can't BUY directly from the game benefits, like buying a Q200 Saw or Swords and Armor. You can only buy that from other players, inside a finite market.
If you can't find a seller, then what would the purpose of 30 subtokens be?
