Stream feedback: terraforming idea, dirt is stackable

During the stream, it was mentioned that terraforming sucked. I think an easy way to make terraforming easier whilst maintaining the granularity of control of heights would be to make soil have a weight, similar to ashes. One of the biggest problems with soil collection currently (once you get a decent metal shovel) isn't the speed of digging tiles or the stamina drain, but how much effort it is to move your tiny inventory of dirt into stockpiles every few scoops.

This is partially because a shovel is two-handed, so tsacks aren't an option. But if each unit of dirt was to take up 0.05 or 0.1 kg, and each inventory space allowed us to store 1kg of dirt, then it would make transporting dirt to stockpiles, and filling surveys, much easier.

A nice side effect is that we could store large quantities of dirt in barrels, and of course use buckets :). Stockpile size could remain the same, as barrels give a better storage option that requires some effort and planning to create -> 1000 units per barrel at 0.1 kg/unit vs 250 in a stockpile.

Seems like a good solution, I second this.

If a weight system is too complex to implement for dirt, my idea was reducing how much dirt each tile / height holds. Dunno if that's possible tho

barrels of dirt are a waste of wood, but i agree with the weight thing.

it is 1 now. how could it be reduced any further? The only solution here is to enlarge the height-scaling itself - but it will lead to even more uglier landscape.

Maybe let players create/designate a dirt stockpile into which the dirt from nearby digging jobs is automatically placed?

Some custom scripts already do something like this, it's very convenient and could probably be worked into the vanilla client.

On this topic, the "ground not level enough" error for placing dirt stockpiles never really made sense to me, maybe that could use some attention as well.

I enjoy this idea. I think clay, dirt, mulberry leaves, and tea should be treated as a powder, being measured in kg and stored in barrels instead of stockpiles.

Would probably be more work to convert clay recipes, but that's another story

IMO it'd be best if you could park a wheelbarrow on a survey and soil automatically went inside it. Also, surveys should take from wheelbarrows when filling in soil.
