Recommended Walrus Changes

Postby kilakan » Sun Jan 15, 2017 1:16 am

Now that everyone has some time to have experienced the fat grey terror known as walrii I'd like to make some observations of my own.

Their movement speed:While I agree that you should have zero chance of escaping a walrus on open water, I really feel that them moving faster than you possibly can on dry land is a bit insane. As it currently is, if you aren't equipped to solo a walrus and it aggroes you there is almost nothing you can do (aside from going in a cave/house) to escape it. If it was possible to outrun it like a boar on land I'd feel they would be substantially better balanced.

That they flee:It's a bit irritating having to block them in completely while being attacked to be able to kill them, yes they bleed out eventually but since they have such a high hp pool and move so fast it's nearly impossible to find the corpse. Which I suspect is also destroyed if they bleed out in deep water. Of course, if they did get slowed on land then them fleeing would not be an issue at all, you'd just have to drive them to shore to kill them.

Otherwise they are a great addition to the game Jorb and Loftar! Keep this sort of thing up, new animals that have new tricks is awesome!

Seriously, their land speed is beyond the limits of my suspension of disbelief.

yeah, it's nice to have some dangerous swimming enemies, but being able to out swim and outrun players? That's just ridiculous. At least give us a chance to escape them.

Or rather it should be possible to kill them without needing to fully wall them in first because thats a bit of a dumb mechanic

The main issue is that if you can outrun it, you can cheese it. look at boars, they're slower than 3 run speed and theyre a joke.

walrus' speed on land should be exactly equal to run speed, that way you can outrun the walrus on land with some quick thinking, such as hooking the walrus on a tree, or hopping a cliff to put some distance between you.

and this has been mentioned like a dozen times, but give them a 'territory' that they're willing to pursue non aggressive players in.

in general, hunting needs some improvements to be actually engaging without cheese everywhere.

Walrus shouldn't pursue far from water and if they're injured too much they should flee to deep water, making it a bit harder to cheese them. And I guess if they're fleeing they should avoid all players, not just ones tht have aggro on them, so it's a bit harder to trap them with boats. With these behavior changes I think they'd be fine moving slow on land. The fast land movement is just killing the immersion for me

Thank you for the kind words, OP!

I think we did nerf them somewhat. Arguably animal behavior and AI should improve generally in more ways than one.
