Cave Ins

Cave in's on first tiles of caves are bullshit. Yeah its been brought up before, and here it is again. We should be punished for ignoring cave in tiles, not tapping the wall of a cave for the first time. Its silly that I can only touch 3 tiles of a cave a day before having to stop due to my pile of wounds.

It's an old request to be able to break the cave surface without fear of a cave in.

Downside of this would be that sampling a cave every three tiles would be possible and this would be exploited by the usual suspects. Hence we can't have nice things.

Pretty sure you are meant to use rustroot so you don't have to risk your life digging in 1000 places.

There is a great disparity between what we're supposed to do and what people actually do.

Exactly.
It makes OP's complaint invalid because he isn't using the game mechanics. There is already a solution to his problem.

As suggested in other places: a small support (3*3 area) that can be built without metal would imho be a good compromise. As it requires resources it wouldn't be that exploity for the usual suspects but would save on headaches for normal players.
