Right now the thing that makes alting a good idea (if we ignore stupid mechanics like nidbanes) is the fact that past a point, investing more LP into unarmed would just give you too little stats for too much LP.
The idea:
Exponential combat stats growth (the more LP you invest, the less LP you have to invest to get stronger in combat stats) + a delta cap (Once a character is over x many times stronger than another character, any added difference doesn't do anything)
Sounds like a retarded idea but bear with me.
If the delta cap is implemented then the exponential combat stats growth doesn't do harm.
HOWEVER
to stay actually competitive and/or dominate players would have to invest all their resources into making a single, main character, because as soon as they start splitting resources to alts too, they are already far behind the person who uses 1 main and the delta between them will be capped (negatively for the alt user)
This makes it so you must have only 1 character to stay competitive and relevant in the combat "scene" AND this makes hermits and weak players not-so-crippled, because if they are too weak to get that much combat stats the delta cap is there to prevent them from getting stomped.
