Wells should require only 1 rope to construct.
Dowsing rod would guide you towards better quality nodes instead of "water depth"

that would lead to either your circle shining brightly or sprucecaps being wiped from the face of earth ;) i like wells how they are now

we should be able to "test" the local water sample before building a well though...

maybe create a water drill. that just eats stamina and xp depending on the depth and/or quality?
you can use this to test the water quality of a well location.

seems to be at least usefull to know approx what the quality is before you build a 30 rope well.

you know you have the drowsing rod to find the vein and NOT build that 30 rope well right? o.0 you find spot where 2-3 ropes are needed, you build, you sample, you go look for better one. Perhaps some kind of hearth magic which costs 2-5k per use but you have to stand directly above it

So you think it is okay that wells will still cost 1-40 ropes depending on where you build them.
But you no longer could prospect places where you could construct them with less ropes?

Yes, I think this is ok. I do not care how much rope it cost for well, rope is trivial item for getting and I can see this cost when I place building site. I care about quality of waters, since this is function of well, and I can not see this value until after build.

within 5 hours of update with this we would have first open world battleground over few higher q nodes over the world, a fight over a well which anyone could have used if not claimed by a well that everyone want to have for themself for the slight edge in q on pie xD

Downsing rod should only be able to show quality tiles lower than quality of the rod and user of rod's survival skills.

good then only big factions will get to kill each other, noobs will just leanto block the average wells.
