Add Mining

Its just stupid that MASONRY hardcaps things that you mine.
Masonry and hacking rock with pickaxe are like completely different things.

Also the whole mechanic does not make that much sense as you will melt it anyway, Does not matter what your skills are. Metal is going to be the same quality anyway whether you chipped it unskillfully or skillfully.

IMO adding masonry was a good change. It represents your character's knowledge about minerals and such. Mb the issue is with naming the skill, but imo it can pass
Ofc. it would matter how you chipped the ore. Having low knowledge, you might chip ore along with the minerals around it which would change the metal's composition when smelted thus making it less pure.

As a geologist, the way you gather the mineral does change the purity, and potentially the composition of it. Imagine if somebody was digging for diamonds (RL scenario) and they didn't know what the fuck they were doing and they drilled right through a beautiful one. Or they hit the ore in such a way to shatter it along a cleavage plane.

But digging diamonds is not the same as digging iron ore? Right? Diamonds are a bit different, if you shatter them its hard to make up a big diamond chunk out of those.
But in my understanding. You could grind iron to fine dust, then melt it again to ingots, and the quality would be pretty much the same.

Quality wouldn't be the same, as you are adding impurities. Sure it'd still be iron, mostly, but now it's .01% something else as well.

If you have a better name for a skill encompassing the knowledge of ceramics and minerals, I'm all ears.

Yeah masonry wrong choice of name if we are talking about metal quality . Also as mining engineer ,no digging doesn't effect quality of ore mineral ( you can just separate unnecessary rock) also generally you can't damage diamond with pickaxe because of hardness . Mineral processing effect quality or purity of metal .

like op said masonry name should changed to mining or mineral understanding etc .
