Mulch uses

Postby JadynFaye » Thu Mar 30, 2017 3:02 pm

I'm not sure if this has been suggested before, but my search didn't turn up anything relevant so I figure I'd post.
I was cutting down and replanting trees yesterday using mulch and it got me thinking about potential uses for said mulch. When you're planting trees, it has the chance to change the terrain around the trees to change to a forest terrain. Would it ever be possible to maybe use mulch like we do seeds to plant grass so maybe when planting trees, the terrain wouldn't change? I mean, I suppose it's more an aesthetic thing as you can always just replow the tile after the tree is cut down and plant grass, but I just thought it might be cool to have a bit more control over how the biomes change over time. I'm not sure if there's something I'm missing in my thinking that could impact gameplay negatively.

Tbh, the impact would probably be more on the dev side of things. It might be somewhat tricky to implement fully, depending how terrain type is coded. I guess you could have a grass tile visually that's coded like a paving tile for a quick and dirty fix, but then you'd have no animals/forageables spawning on it (which might be unintuitive to players unfamiliar with the mechanic).

They don't have infinite coding time, so the question is more "is this update worth the X hours it would take to implement". I'm not sure on that one, it's a neat little concept outside that though. having control over making your base attractive is a nice general feature.

Right, mostly for the looks of course. haha I mean, I guess that in the meantime I have use for all the extra seeds when I'm planting and replanting trees inside my palisade.

Having the ability to create the natural biomes from scratch would be interesting from an aesthetic standpoint, but most likely be way overpowered when it comes to forageables.

We have toyed with ideas for allowing people to spread the biomes. I'd like to, but I'm not sure we've found a fun way yet.
