New feature to show the amount of coin crowns

Postby rainland » Tue Apr 18, 2017 6:00 pm

Hi,

I've been reading the trading forum and many people seem to be rustling their jimmies about the community markets.
The people are worried about the common currency which the market provides, but can later make more to buy the stuff people brought there and thus making a huge inflation to the currency.

I was wondering if there would be a possibility to make a new info line when you hover over some certain crowned currency to see how many have been pressed of that kind. That will at least put pressure on the
market people not to press more half the way. What do you think?
Thanks!

pressing more golden coins costs gold. If a market uses cheap coins one could assume they plan on stamping out a lot of it for themselves

Well, the good thing about haven currency is that it's backed by valuable metals. 10 gold coins = 1 gold nugget. No matter how much is printed, you still know the value is guarenteed at the metal value of said coin. Do we really need more protections than that? Quills at least are given out at 111% the price of a gold bar. That means the absolute worst case scenario is that the coins lose 11% of their value and are worth no more than a bar of gold. If people were using iron coins I'd be pretty suspicious, but even steel coins could potentially make sense.

I mean overall, the mere fact that Quills are starting to be used as a currency in trade posts is a sign that this currency model is a smashing success. If a faction can get a coin used to the point that it's becoming a true currency, I think this system is working awesomely.

Good points.
I haven't had the time to play on this world but I remember from previous that Sevillian community market had steel coins, cast iron coins (10 = 1 steel) and bronze (10 = 1 cast iron).
So if markets nowadays use currency which has the value in itself (like the gold coins you mentioned) then its of course the best solution possible.

Are you talking about hedgehog quills? What?

Both established markets use golden coins as far as I'm aware. But yes sorry, the Quill is the currency of the Hedgehug market. They use gold and silver coins with 1g worth ~2s. The system is secure because everyone knows even if the market say got raided, the coins hold their precious metal values. I believe Dis' market calls their currency Crowns.

I'd completely agree with you in not trusting bronze/iron and maybe even steel coins. But with gold and silver their value is quite secure.

Alright, I must have misunderstood then (I've never been to dis's market, I thought I saw "golden crown" mentioned when talking about their currency). My apologies.

Hedgehugs' tactic to approaching it is ideal imo. Precious backed currency and enforced valuation higher than the currency so people don't just melt it down constantly. But not high enough that people fear they'll print currency and flood the market.

Meh, I don't think a magically updating total tally would be much fun. Part of the problem of inflation is precisely discovery of it.
