When managing a small herd of animals, it's annoying to have to pick through every one of them to find the one you want. It would definitely be worthwhile.
Most of us do use fenced areas to deal with this and separate out the herd. It isn't absolutely necessary, but it would be a huge quality of life improvement for those that manage livestock. I'm sure you guys can come up with a solution for it, even with the methods of player recognition that exist in the game. Branding seems to be a very good way to tag a list of animals to a person (or claim) so that they are a "buddy" to it. Maybe a separate tab listing "animals" that have been branded in the buddy window... or just a separate window.
I know branding was implemented as a way to tag permanent ownership of an animal, but this would be an excellent extension to that.
Another possibility is to just show the animal names to anyone that would have permissions to interact with the animal on a claim. I'm not sure that is easily done (possible, just not easy) inside the current code framework, though, given how name displays work.
