We all know that doing something for the sake of doing it doesn't work. The game has to support it. The great example would be the inns. A lot of people attempted to do them. But since it is impossible to prevent your cutlery to be stolen, or the tables being destroyed by the eaters, or prevent people bringing their own food and etc. etc. it is impossible to have a meaningful inn (that would be profitable). Consequently, you do not see them in the game. Same with the markets. Hafen didn't have marketplaces until the mechanics made it so that trading via barters is more efficient than via face to face.
Let's revisit the idea of an inn as a social gathering place. With the bonefires it would be possible to make the inns a profitable business model, since the visitors could always come and have the bonus of eating from the other visitors. What we would need is:
A special inn table that has the same barterstand hands system + cutlery slots. Once you buy a food, it drops to the table menu.
- the customer shouldn't be able to put his own food into the table
- the customer shouldn't be able to repair the cutlery
- the customer shouldn't be able to take the cutlery
- the customer can take the food he bought from the table
