So I would like to make a suggestion for a fun activity (and arguably very unethical), that won't solve the question above, but perhaps will help. Cockfighting.

I would like to see some kind of mini cage or arena that will allow small animals to fight against one another, with their Quality and RNG being the factors that will lead one being triumph over the other. (Note you wouldn't control them like Pokemon).
Small animals we have now:
-Chickens <---- Breedable
-Rabbits <---- Breedable
-Squirrels
-Crabs
-Hedgehogs
-Ducks
-Swans
-Beetles (I think, I haven't played in a while)
Chickens and Rabbits would appeal to those who like to grind Quality, while non-breedable critters would appeal to those who like to leave their walls and go scavenger hunting. It would be similar where one of the ideas for Pokemon came from, trying to find the best beetle to compete against others. I don't know about you, but the idea of traveling the world in search of the highest Quality Crab or Hedgehog to compete against my friends sounds fun.

Edit:
Upon searching through Google instead of the search section of the forums, I found this: viewtopic.php?f=48&t=48254
Still I would like to see some sort of arena for small-critters (aside from chickens) to compete against one another.
