Small suggestion.

Certain items will have different appearances based on their Quality. Say a low Q10 cake would look pretty "meh", while a Q100 cake would look much more impressive.

Too binary tbh. Once you reach a certain quality the coolness factor in raising quality just disappears.

Possibly this could be done with a render filter, for example by reducing the color saturation of the perfect inventory graphics for the lower quality items (or brighten it for the better ones)?

Feeling the effect of that would only be to have the majority of items look washed out and not so hawt.

could add a procedural "glow" around items/icons, ranging from yellow to red, or some other prettier color range

Yeah, background color of inventory slot could serve as indicator without compromising the actual icon art. An inventory that looks like the coat of many colors might be fugly, though.
