Imagine if H&H had no farming.

Thoughts on the further development of Haven & Hearth? Feel free to opine!

Imagine if H&H had no farming.

Postby GamingRAM » Tue Jun 13, 2017 9:57 am

Lets have a little discussion on the topic if farming was forgone. Maybe some ideas, thoughts and discussion will arise on game design and balance?

What do you think would change?
What would be the new meta?
Would hunting and foraging be more rewarding?

Thoughts and discussion please.

with out farming would need to go more caveman before the "farming times" mabye neanderthals and the like, foraging would be fun see alot more people, clans would fight for best foraging spots

It's true that farming makes other food sources kinda useless as the world goes on because it shoots ahead in quality. So here's an idea to narrow the gap between farmed and hunted/foraged/fished food: quality should no longer increase food FEPs, instead it can lower hunger and/or satiations. It would also make it a lot easier to balance foods against eachother if they always stayed at base FEPs.

That's an interesting concept.

Farming was a major breakthrough in human history, which led to the creation of large cities and all the things that come with them. Despite being requested repeatedly, the game doesn't have any kind of nomadic content. But if hunting and foraging were the main activity in haven one would assume that would change, and that would be cool. Implementation of specific animal nodes and hq animal migration waves could also encourage players to move around and interact more, just like that hunger game's clock arena thing.

Instead of a complete absence of farming, what I think would be interesting is if it took us much longer to develop such a skill and therefore created a sense of technological progression. Right now we're able to begin planting stuff in one or two days after the world start, so developing agriculture doesn't feel like an achievement at all.

I genuinely like farming, but not the amount the game requires right now. I also don't like is how its quality eclipses everything else, and how farming has become basically the only feasible way to grind stats. I don't want it removed, but rebalanced in some way definitely. Hunting and foraging being important parts of the food chain, now they're just "Hunt and forage so you can make stuff from farmed ingredients".

Honestly, I feel that animal wild quality should increase over time somehow to keep it competitive with farming, sausages buffed and baked goods nerfed. Farming should be useful for specific stats (crafting stats?) while hunting should take care of others (combat stats?).

The issue right now is that farming does everything.
