Since this was necro'd:
I would prefer belts to add an individual inventory grid (not slots for arbitrary sized items, as being able to carry around a dozend B12 in a troll belt is silly), then the ability to summon any gear in that inventory on demand, while locking the space it comes from (transparent item ghost could stay there) so it'll be put back exactly where it was taken from when you no longer use it - triggered either by summoning something else or by performing an action that needs an empty hand.
Side effect: introduce that holding something that wasn't summoned from a belt (so it would auto-store) will block actions that need free hands.
To not make this complete tedium add a newbie belt that can be crafted within the first hour, like just needing a few strings, that gives just enough space for an axe, a saw and a 1x1 water container* (so it would have either 2x2 or 4x1 cells in it's inventory) since the player, before having one, will need to juggle stuff between his hands and inventory - because having an something (like an axe) in the hand implies that you can't use that hand for anything else ... like a waterflask to take a sip or an apple to eat it.
Futher belts should be drop-able to the ground and into containers, it should possible to pick them up to equip them and also to open one that is sitting on the ground or in a container - but it should be completely impossible to put one in the player inventory while it isn't empty or to put stuff in one while it is in a players inventory.
* a waterskin variant should be added for that use, made from a 1x1 prepared hide and 1 string and holding only 1L fluid.
