Typical excuses. Yes it will always happen but that's no reason to encourage it. Yes it's how the developers get paid but there should be a better system some day.
It's not the same thing anyway. If people are doing transactions themselves it requires something of value to be removed from the game, time spent, player interaction, etc... It's more natural to the economy and the game IMO.
It could still be controlled within reason. If the developers banned anyone caught selling, posting links to sites, etc, the sellers would have to launder their money/items, creating more work for them, raising the price for the buyer, making it less common, etc...
With a reporting system in place it would not add too much extra work for the developers. If these actions were condemned by the community then the community would essentially be able to police itself.
