Lumbermill - a place to produce & store planks

Hey,

Today when doing some woodworks I noticed the game could use something like a lumbermill. Considering we already have a building with mechanical power capable of turning wheat/barley seeds into flour I guess it could also be able of doing some woodworks for the less work-loving Hearthlings.

The way this would work would be like this:

You input a log, and you get a number of boards back depending (or not!) on what type of tree you input there. It would also be handy to have a boards stock somewhere next to it capable of housing a finite (or not! ;) ) amount of boards for the taking. To make it more realistic you'd have to use some hard metal bars in order to build it.

The problem arises when we consider the quality of the lumbermill machine built inside a mill. Does it have any impact on the quality of the boards produced, or not? Technically the issue becomes more significant when we also consider the fact that regular grindmills do not have an impact on the outcoming flour quality.

Do you have any other thoughts about the subject? Join in on the discussion!

I like it! I can't say I've used a mill to grind grain yet, but a lumber mill would be badass to have.
If you have nothing to make, then maybe it is still something. Why? Because you possess the idea that you wish to make something from nothing.

Great idea! I think, the quality should be determined by the saw blade you put in? It should be replaceable as well. Maybe, make a special inventory inside of the machine. This mechanic could resolve another problem: public anvils+hammers. People cannot place their hammers free to use by the public because they could be stolen.

Ohhh yess. Great idea. Anything that promotes more social behavior (making public tools to promote people going to your place etc.) should be seriously considered.

Have it incorporate some harder-to-get materials (like steel for the sawblade) in bulk to make it an investment to get a good Q lumbermill. That could justify it not taking a toll on the board quality, but maybe incorporating some materials that tend to be inherently of low-ish quality could balance it out a bit or at least make lumbermills that match the quality of saws a commodity. I think it'd be justified to then also give lumber mills a boost to the amount of boards produced by a single log compared to a saw.

With that said, however, from my understanding, these things have traditionally been waterpowered. It'd be neat to see that introduced as well.

Neat idea. Storage in the anvil, like a dolmen, where you place hammer and tongs. These items appear resting on top of the anvil until you step up to use it, and require permission to remove. Same could apply for this lumber mill.

I would prefer it to quality wise work like the windmill: simply not changing it at all. Log in = Boards out.
Dropping logs into it to retrieve ready sawn boards gives the benefit of automation, manual labor of a qualified carpenter gives the benefit of improved quality.

I think that if you use lumbermill to produce planks they should give a shit ton of them but of lower q so it is a bit balanced, and doing it manually should be the same as now.
