Snake oil

Postby Potjeh » Thu Sep 28, 2017 8:53 pm

Takes one whole adder, 1l of vinegar, 1 ancient root to craft. Has a random chance to completely heal any one wound (randomly selected if multiple wounds are present), or deal a new type of wound that doesn't take much HHP but inflicts a massive int debuff. Since there's no limit on HP it can heal it can't scale along that axis, so maybe quality should improve the chances of positive outcome.

Mmmm might be OP because you could remove all other wounds first and then use it on your like 300 dmg deep cut or w/e and instantly remove it all for the cost of a root (basically). 2 extra items and the root goes from healing 17 hhp to a crazy number.

Even with the chance of a large penalty to INT it'd be overpowered as it is.
It might be better if the wound's healing ability was at least hard capped by the q of the snake oil.

I do like it though

Skip the roots, just put snakes in the extraction press, make some turns and you have Snake Oil, ready to fill into a bottle.

It shouldn't be able to instal-heal by itself, just modify the healing speed of the wound by +50% to -25% and at the same time modify the chance of the wound turning into something more nasty by +/-25%. Both factors independantly randomized and certainly without informing the player of the mood of the RNG. Modifiers could differ for different types of wounds.

Can only be applied once per wound (gives a 'treated with' postfix to it) or you drink the whole bottle to affect all current wounds in trade for some additional debuffs (diarrea, vomiting, etc.) for a while.

I like the idea of snake oil done one way or another!

Sounds pretty silly, I like it.
“We still, alas, cannot forestall it-
This dreadful ailment's heavy toll;
The spleen is what the English call it,
We call it simply, Russian soul.”

An idea to consider: Tedium, a Feature.

Would it be possible to hide quality but still have it exist on an item? It would be awesome if snake oil's chances for positive income improved with quality, but you couldn't actually see this quality, you'd have to trust the guy you're buying it from. He'd know because he knew the quality of ingredients - that is until he mixes up his bottles.

Oooh, and fake snake oil, much cheaper to craft but always gives negative outcome but is indistinguishable from the real thing ¦]

Lol, isn't that exactly what 'snake oil ' is.

Maybe they can be used right after creation (either extraction press, or the OP's suggestion) and they have a higher chance for negative than positive, or you can sit them on a herbalist table for a random, but long (16-32 RL hours) time which increases the chance for positive

i think it should be the ingredients that determine if good or bad, end product looks the same so you have to trust the seller

Chinese workers came to the U.S. in the mid to late 1800s to help build the transcontinental railroad. They used to have bottles of snake oil in their medicine bags to use as treatment for the injuries, aches, and pains that came along with working on the railroad. The snake oil was made from the flesh of Chinese water snakes. It became a sensation and some entrepreneurial American medicine men wanted to get in on the action.

They began to make their snake oil using the rendered oil from American rattlesnakes, which they then sold from town to town along the railroad line. When they realized that getting oil from rattlesnakes was difficult and dangerous, they began to use simple mineral oil instead. This, of course, didn’t help anyone with their aches and pains, and eventually these medicine men were found to be frauds. The term “snake oil salesman” became synonymous with a charlatan or a quack. —Dr. Joshua Levitt

Should be implemented, but should do nothing imo
