Character Levels

I think there should be some way to examine other characters and animals to get a glimpse at their abilities/stats either in general or in relation to your own characters. I think the ability should rely on perception, stealth, and possibly exploration. The reason stealth is included is that I think the person being examined should be notified in some way, and the stealth factor could affect it. Maybe the longer you examine a character, the more information that is yielded, but the chances of being noticed also go up. Blatantly staring at that guy in the woods is like to get you noticed after all.
Might extend examination of characters to brief bits of info on their gear.
An example of this ability in use could be along these lines if you examined a crafter: "The hands on this one appear to be very deft" implying high dexterity. Or, "His head seems to bulge with the great knowledge stored there" for a high intel.

I see this as a ability that can be used on someone indefinitely, and every few seconds you have a chance of getting a bit of info on who or what you are looking at, equipment, stats, hair style, criminal state. Distance should be a factor as well in the success of this move. If a person dislikes being examined then they will have to dispose of the watcher, get away from them, or perhaps wear a cloak or clothing that could impede this move greatly. Lots of fun things can come from this.

Examining creatures could glean hints to their qualities and move sets, but also risk having them flee or fight prematurely.
Could be nice for boss fights some day.
Just a little idea, didn't spend much time hashing it out but here it is.

Eh yeah, but i'm leaning more towards getting messages with grains of information rather than hard numbers.

How about it gradiates like rocks do?

Examining one's strength, "This hearthling's arms could rip your own from your body." All the way to, "This hearthling's arms are meek and withering and fall far short of your own."

But not seeing raw numbers, just how strong they would be relative to yourself.
