Light sources

Certainly torch's exist, but the Halo has sparked the thought for interior decorative lighting. Glimmermoss could glow, lanterns running on rendered animal fat is also an option that could also used different dye on glass for fun effects. This could also lead to the addition of lighthouses with different colored lights. Cities could then use them on a color coded system for whatever necessary.

its a good idea, but keep in mind that people dont keep fires burning because it just uses up materials. You can still see in midnight, and even if the devs made that not an option, there are still so many options relating to lighting that make light sources even more useless. Thats not even including custom clients. Many people strip the game of all distractions like trees, rocks, shadows, everything just to have a slight edge. If you watch almost any pvp vidoe or screenshot, you see people with amber or something of the like, the game completely ugly so that they can only see friends and enemies, nothing else, and so all obstacles are visible but dont destract them. I still use default client because i disagree with this. I dislike having all these things made easy for me like navigating and whatnot. Anyways, for there to be a use, you will have to come up with one. Some ideas are to make night actually dark and add a reason for light by making it difficult to see without it. However, some client will just negate this just like they negate the difficulties of the default ui. not that its bad, i just don't like it and want to stay with the true nature of the game. Another idea is to have a debuff w/out light or have players be penalized for not being in light.
as it stands right now, light is just for decoration, and people aren't willing to sacrifice even a small amount of materials for something they might not even need or want

Nice thoughts mate ... this is exactly what I was talking about some time ago in here about the dominant way of thinking in our era.

"That which is truly disconcerting is not that the world transforms itself into a total dominion of technique.
Far more disconcerting is that man is not at all prepared for
this radical alteration of the world.
Far more disconcerting is that we are still not capable of
reaching, by means of a pondered thought, a proper comparison with that which is truly emerging in our era.
M. Heidegger, Gelassenheit(1959)"

That means we are slowing throwing away the "human" aspect of us, cause the total dominion of technique in our era. It doesn't matter anymore what is beuatiful, what is feeling, what emotion, etc.. etc... the main concept of the techinque is just one and very easy: max results with the least effort.
Everything else doesn't matter anymore, and this is very dangerous for many reasons that would be too long to explain in here, I just tell you that this way of thinking is the same of Nazism.

P.S. Sorry for the long OT, end here on my side.
