I liked when there were no light in caves, not at all. I mean I know that everyone played on Ender Custom Client but still, totally dark caves should be a thing. It would also force devs to implement new sources of light like I dunno... some kinds of lanters or magic that allows you to make the surroundings brighter. :!:

An invitation to light-hacks, unfortunately. Darkness is nothing we can easily enforce.

Nonsense, sure you can do that.

Being lit can be easily checked server-side, so you could just make the character:
- stumble and faceplant for a nice concussion every few steps (possibly add a 'stumbled in the darkness' experience to this)
- unable to interact with objects and pickup items
- unable to fight but being aggroed by everything (=batcape does nothing, even rats attack) as these sense the vulnerability and the free meal

A light hack might be even contra-productive in that scenario, as one wouldn't even see where the darkness (thus the area of endless pain) begins.

These are just the first things that came to my mind, without even thinking.
I'm sure you could come up with more an better (=worse for the player) stuff.

I agree that it should be dark. I remember finding my first cave in 2d haven using the vanilla client. And wow, it was so much fun! I had to make fires to explore just one passage till the cave fork. It was so interesteing and really creepy and actually felt like a real cave exploring. And now all those are passages are light and boring.

On top of that, I would rather opt for toggle in options to make "dark caves" as an optional. Not Forced.

I'm not particularlly fond of darkness, but couldn't you just limit the amount of tiles the server sends to the client down to a lot smaller of a radius, and then fill the rest with darkness on the client?
